Columbia, Maryland, is such a great place to own a dog. From the tree-lined trails to open, grassy fields, there’s no shortage of spots where our furry friends can run, play and soak up the fresh air.

Whether you’re in Brampton Hills, Long Reach, or Kings Contrivance, Columbia’s dog-friendly parks are a great place to unwind and experience those little moments that remind us why we love calling Howard County home.

Here are a few favorite dog parks in Columbia:

Worthington Dog Park

8170 Hillsborough Rd, Ellicott City, MD

Worthington Dog Park in nearby Ellicott City is a gem I’ve visited for years. It’s just a quick drive from Brampton Hills or Font Hill, and provides a safe, fenced-in space where dogs can socialize off-leash. I love that they’ve thought of everything—separate areas for big dogs and small ones, tons of room to run, and pet waste stations all over the park to keep things tidy.

Blandair Regional Park

5700 Oakland Mills Road Columbia, MD

If you live in Long Reach or Oakland Mills, you’re probably already familiar with Columbia's Blandair Regional Park. Its wide-open fields and shady seating areas make it a fantastic choice for dog-friendly outings. While you’ll need to keep your pup leashed on the trails, the views and peaceful vibes are well worth it. Plus, there are waste stations everywhere, so you can bag that poop and toss it in a bin without thinking twice!

Lake Elkhorn Park

Patuxent Branch Trail, Columbia, MD 21045

Located near the Owen Brown and Kings Contrivance neighborhoods, Lake Elkhorn Park is a popular choice for dog owners who prefer a more relaxed, scenic environment. There’s just something about the way the trails wrap around the lake—it’s so peaceful. My dog and I love to take slow strolls here, especially in the early morning when the water’s calm, and you can hear the birds chirping. It’s the perfect place to recharge.

And like all good parks in Columbia, they’ve got waste stations conveniently placed along the paths so we can all help protect the local ecosystem and maintain a pleasant environment for the next visitor.

Winter Safety Tips for Dog Park Visits

Winter in Howard County has its own kind of magic, but it also means we need to look out for our furry friends a little more. Here’s what I’ve learned over the years to keep my pup safe during those frosty outings:

  • Bundle Up. If your dog’s anything like mine, he’ll appreciate a cozy sweater when the temperature drops. Remember the rule of thumb: If you’re cold, they’re cold. (Unless your pooch is a husky, or maybe a polar bear.)
  • Stay Visible. With early sunsets, reflective gear on a trail or roadside walk is a must—for both of you.
  • Watch Your Step. Icy trails can be tricky, so stick to the paths you know well.
  • Bring Water. Even in the cold, staying hydrated is important for humans and canines alike.

Keep Columbia’s Dog Parks Clean

One of the things I love most about Columbia’s dog parks is how clean and welcoming they are. But that doesn’t happen by accident—it’s a team effort. Picking up after our pups, respecting leash rules, and just being good park citizens help keep these spaces amazing for everyone.

Here are a few simple ways we can all pitch in:

  • Bring extra waste bags. Although many of the dog poop bins offer bags, you never know when they’ll run out.
  • Keep your dog leashed when it’s required, even if your pup is the best-behaved angel dog in the world.
  • Be aware that other park-goers aren’t as comfortable around dogs as we are.

Let’s keep Columbia’s parks the special places they’ve always been!
